Iran at the FIFA World Cup

Iran at the FIFA World Cup is a story of near misses and proud moments. The team, known as Team Melli, has reached the tournament seven times. They have never passed the group stage, yet they have produced some unforgettable nights.

This guide walks through every Iran World Cup appearance in simple terms. You will see the key matches, the best players, and the famous wins.

How Many Times Has Iran Qualified?

Iran has qualified for the World Cup seven times. The years are 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.

The last four appearances came in a row, from 2014 onward. That is the longest unbroken run in Iranian football history.

Despite all these trips, Iran has always gone out in the group stage.

1978: Iran's First World Cup

Iran reached its first World Cup in 1978, held in Argentina. The squad was young and the group was hard.

The highlight was a 1-1 draw with Scotland, with Iraj Danaeifard scoring. Iran then lost 0-3 to the Netherlands and 1-4 to Peru.

It was a tough start, but it put Iranian football on the world map.

1998: The Famous Win Over the USA

France 1998 gave Iran its most famous result, a 2-1 win over the United States. Hamid Estili and Mehdi Mahdavikia scored the goals.

The match carried political weight, and the players swapped flowers before kickoff. It is still one of the proudest nights in Iranian sport.

Iran finished bottom of the group, losing 0-1 to Yugoslavia and 0-2 to Germany. The win over the USA, though, made the tournament special.

2006 and 2014: Two Hard Campaigns

Germany 2006 brought one point. Iran drew 1-1 with Angola through Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh, then lost to Mexico 1-3 and Portugal 0-2.

Brazil 2014 was tighter. Iran drew 0-0 with Nigeria and pushed Argentina hard before Lionel Messi scored a late winner, 0-1. A 1-3 loss to Bosnia ended the run.

Under coach Carlos Queiroz, Iran became known for a strong, organised defence. That identity still shapes the team today.

2018: Iran's Best World Cup

Russia 2018 was Iran's strongest campaign. They opened with a 1-0 win over Morocco, then drew 1-1 with Portugal through a Karim Ansarifard penalty.

Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand even saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo. Iran lost 0-1 to Spain, but finished with four points.

That was third place in Group B, the closest Iran has come to the knockout round.

2022: A Win Over Wales

Qatar 2022 was a mix of high and low. Iran beat Wales 2-0 late on, with goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian.

The other games were hard. England won 6-2 and the United States won 1-0, which knocked Iran out.

The tournament was also marked by protests back home, and the players chose not to sing the anthem before the England game.

Iran's Overall World Cup Record

Across six completed tournaments, Iran's record is 3 wins, 7 draws, and 11 losses. They have scored 16 goals and conceded 34.

Ramin Rezaeian leads the World Cup scoring with 3 goals, followed by Mehdi Taremi with 2. Ehsan Hajsafi is the most experienced, with appearances at four World Cups.

The one missing piece is clear, Iran has never reached the knockout stage.

What Comes Next: 2026

Iran qualified for the 2026 World Cup, their seventh appearance and fourth in a row. The tournament uses a new 48-team format, with more teams reaching the knockout round.

That gives Iran a real chance to make history and pass the group stage for the first time. The squad mixes Europe-based stars with younger talent.
