Five Things English-Speakers Don't Expect
Persian breaks most of the assumptions English-speakers carry from school French or German. Almost all the surprises are good.
No grammatical gender
There is no "he" or "she." Persian has one third-person pronoun (او, ou) for everyone. The verb doesn't change for gender either. You don't memorise tables of masculine/feminine endings, ever.
Verbs are almost all regular
Conjugation in Persian follows one main pattern. Once you know the present stem of a verb, the present, past, and future tenses fall out of it predictably. Compare to French, where every irregular verb is its own little memorisation project.
Word order is SOV, but flexible
Subject–Object–Verb (the verb at the end, like German or Japanese). Once you internalise that, sentences click. And word order is forgiving in conversation, you can rearrange for emphasis without breaking grammar.
The izafe binds nouns lightly
Persian uses a tiny linking vowel called izafe (ezafe) to glue a noun to its modifier. "My book" is literally "book-e man" (with the -e). It looks foreign on day one, but it's a single rule with massive payoff for sentence-building.
The script is hard, then suddenly isn't
Reading right-to-left and joining letters takes about two weeks of daily practice to stop feeling alien. After that, you read at a real pace. Most learners decode their first Persian sign or menu within their first month.
