Iran at the 2026 World Cup
Iran qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a game to spare, topping their Asian qualifying group ahead of Uzbekistan, the UAE, and North Korea. Mehdi Taremi finished as the group's top scorer for the second qualifying cycle in a row.
This will be Iran's seventh World Cup appearance and their fourth in a row, the longest unbroken run in Iranian football history. The tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with an expanded 48-team format.
The squad is a mix of experienced Europe-based regulars and a new wave of younger players who broke through during qualifying. The coach is Amir Ghalenoei, in charge since early 2023. Below, the squad position by position.
The Head Coach, Amir Ghalenoei
Amir Ghalenoei (امیر قلعهنویی) took the Iran job in March 2023 after Qatar 2022. He is one of the most decorated managers in the Iranian domestic game, with league titles at Esteghlal, Sepahan, and Gostaresh Foulad. Before Team Melli, he was Iran's most successful active club coach.
Ghalenoei is known for two things: a disciplined, organised defensive structure, and a strong relationship with the players. The squad respects him, and team meetings are reportedly direct and tactical rather than motivational. He picks on form rather than reputation, which has opened the door for several younger players in this 2026 cycle.
Qualifying went smoothly under him. The real test starts now.
Goalkeepers
Three goalkeepers will travel. Alireza Beiranvand is the long-time number one, the same man who saved Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty at Russia 2018. He is now in his early thirties but still the first-choice keeper. Backups are Hossein Hosseini (Esteghlal) and Payam Niazmand (Sepahan).

Defenders
Iran's defence is built around veterans and a few new faces who earned their spots in qualifying. Ehsan Hajsafi is the most-capped player in the squad and the captain. Sadegh Moharrami is the regular right-back. Shojae Khalilzadeh and Majid Hosseini are the centre-back pair. Milad Mohammadi and Ramin Rezaeian offer experience and full-back cover.

Midfielders
The midfield is where Iran does most of its work. Saeid Ezatolahi is the holding midfielder, the shield in front of the back four. Saman Ghoddos plays as a creative number 10. Alireza Jahanbakhsh is the right winger, the ex-AZ and Brighton man with the most European pedigree in the squad. Mehdi Torabi offers attacking midfield depth.

Forwards
This is the area Iran has the most quality. Sardar Azmoun and Mehdi Taremi are the two main strikers, both playing in top European leagues, both in the prime of their careers. Karim Ansarifard is the experienced third forward. Mohammad Mohebi offers pace off the bench.

The Captain, Ehsan Hajsafi
Ehsan Hajsafi (احسان حاجصفی) wears the armband. He is Iran's most-capped active player, with over 130 international appearances stretching back to 2008. He played at the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups, and 2026 will be his fourth.
Hajsafi is the leader on and off the pitch. At Qatar 2022, he spoke for the squad during the protests that gripped Iran, calling for the country's pain to be acknowledged. That moment defined what kind of captain he is. Tactically, he is a left-back who can step into midfield, comfortable on the ball, and rarely caught out of position.
He is 36 by the time the 2026 World Cup starts, and this will almost certainly be his last tournament. The squad will play for him.
How Iran Plays
Under Ghalenoei, Iran plays a 4,3,3 that flips to a 5,4,1 out of possession. The shape is disciplined. The full-backs tuck in, the wingers drop, and the team defends in two compact banks. This is Iran's identity going back to the Carlos Queiroz era, and Ghalenoei has kept the bones of it.
In attack, Iran relies on quick transitions. Win the ball, find Taremi or Azmoun, get the ball wide to Jahanbakhsh, cross. Set pieces matter, this is a tall, physical squad, and roughly a third of Iran's qualifying goals came from corners or free kicks.
The risk is what it has always been, breaking down deep blocks. Against tournament opponents who sit back, Iran can struggle to create. That's where Azmoun and Taremi earn their money, both can manufacture a chance out of nothing.
Group Draw and What to Expect
Iran was drawn in Group F alongside one European top seed, one African nation, and one CONCACAF qualifier. With the expanded 48-team format, the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advance to the Round of 32. That gives Iran a real path forward.
A realistic target is finishing second in the group and reaching the Round of 16, something Team Melli has never done. The path is there. The Round of 32 should be reachable, the Round of 16 is the dream.
Fixtures are spread across Atlanta, Houston, and Mexico City. The Mexico City venue is a concern, the altitude affects every team and Iran has limited preparation time there. Atlanta and Houston will feel close to home for the large Iranian diaspora in Texas and Georgia.
